Synaptic Research (Mix)

Greg Dunn - Cortex in Metallic Pastels

For this mix I aimed to create a dreamlike and timeless atmosphere – dark (but not too dark). It is calm, yet there are many shifting scenes, many passing landscapes and some conflicting emotions… When it ends, (I hope) it feels as if it was much longer than it actually was …

Like with most previous mixes, I didn’t know where this new one would head to when I started.
But I knew I wanted to include one tiny fragment of the sound of a ‘brain seizure set to music‘ by Stanford scientists Chris Chafe and Josef Parvizi. In a fascinating contrast to what it actually represents, the musical sound they chose to represent the brain seizure sounded like tiny aliens in a retro-scifi movie to me.

In “Hypnogogmatist”, David Toop further investigates the tricks your mind can play – especially in the few seconds between feeling drowsy and falling asleep:

“In the dream, I was at my mothers’ house, my childhood home.
All the rooms were full of sleeping people.
I seemed to be suffering some process of disintegration, as if my psyche was breaking down to different timeframes, losing its coherence and unity.
There was a presence in the house…”

The fantastic artwork is by Greg Dunn, who is combining neuroscience with minimalist Japanese Sumo-E style painting to create his “Neuron Art”.
“Neurons (the cells that comprise your brain) may be tiny in scale, but they possess the same beauty seen in traditional forms of the medium (trees, flowers, and animals)”

So I guess that there ís something of a theme for this mix.
The rest is up to you.

“Synaptic Research” was mixed especially for Headphone Commute, and is especially dedicated to incredible amount of energy and work H_C does there to keep us informed and updated.
Thanks for that, H_C – and of course also for publishing this mix on your blog!

Tristesse D’Automne (Mix)

Tristesse by Jenny Lynne

This mix was created especially for Headphone Commute.
Thanks to H_C for publishing it, and for the beautiful introduction words:

Autumn is here. Darkness slowly creeps up just a little bit earlier. Clouds get grayer and swell up with rain. Trees shed their colors and tighten their belts. And people begin to prepare for winter. But among all the shadows there’s a small ray of light. And with that glow comes the music… For today’s exclusive podcast, Peter van Cooten weaves in layers of haunting soundscapes spanning the gray-scale of the ambient universe. It’s a gorgeous soundtrack to the season of tears… I hope you will enjoy!

26 Shades of Darkness (Mix)

Darkness

The sheer volume of the Headphone Commute’s …And Darkness Came’ compilation – issued as a charity fundraising for the victims of Hurricane Sandy, and boasting 87 tracks (over 6 hours) of music – was also a kind of invitation to create a mix from it.
Presenting a wide range of music from well (and lesser) known artists – covering most of the ambient/electronic/post-classical/improv spectre, the compilation is an overview and ‘who’s who’ of what’s happening at this very moment.
Its diversity of sounds and musical ideas will appeal to everyone with open ears.

Those of you that know some of my ambientblog.net mixes will know that most of my mixes have a cinematic ‘tension/release’ structure, including drones as well as melodic themes…
…And Darkness Came offers a lot of both.
But when I thought about creating a mix from this material, I realized that there already were quite a few great mixes around. Mixes that perfectly represented the wide array of music featured on this compilation. I did not feel I had anything to add to those.

So I decided to find another angle for this mix. I chose to leave out the melodic stuff, the beautiful (often piano) instrumentals, the post-classical (or ‘contemporary melancholic’) compositions – the ones that seem to have the widest audience appeal. And just focus on the, maybe somewhat less obvious, darkest of drones… (Don’t jump to conclusions and think that I don’t like ‘contemporary melancholism’- because I really do – I play them all the time!)

So here’s some of the ‘darkest of the darkness’. It’s not representative at all of the complete compilation (which is good, since I strongly urge you to download the full compilation for the ridiculous price it is offered for, and in the meantime help fund the cause it was created for). I also offer my sincere apologies to all artists included for using only fragments of their tracks. That’s just another reason to buy the full compilation!

Thanks to Headphone Commute for making this happen. Whatever the state of the musical ‘industry’ may be in, the musical ‘community’ feels more alive now than ever before.

…. And Darkness Came.

...and darkness came

The announcement of this charity compilation – the very first release of the popular Headphone Commute weblog – has caused quite a buzz in the ‘ambient’ music community. I’t not very difficult to see why.

Boasting a tracklisting of 87 tracks, it seems that almost everyone artist imaginable has contributed to …. And Darkness Came.
More than six hours of music (and sounds) for just USD 10 (or more, of course) – of which all proceedings will go to Doctors Without Borders and The Humane Society to support those affected by the recent Hurricane Sandy.

How’s that for a Christmas present?!

Just one glance on the list of contributing artist is enough to see what an impressive line-up this is. I cannot even begin to name them all, so I will just mention some of the more familiar artists:
Helios, Simon Scott, Kane Ikin, Roel Funcken, Sunn Hammer, Pleq, Autistici, Kreng, Julien Neto, Machinefabriek, Hammock, Lawrence English, Loscil, Peter Broderick, Nils Frahm, Ólafur Arnalds, Antonymes, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Dakota Suite, Olan Mill,Clem Leek, Dustin O’Halloran, Christoph Berg, Max Richter, Hauschka, Clint Mansell, Valgeir Sigurdsson, Bersarin Quartett, Brambles, Rafael Anton Irisarri, Ian Hawgood, Radere, Celer
-and that’s not even half the list!!

I guess most listeners will listen to these tracks in random mode, but it’s good to see Headphone Commute took great care to the track sequence:

“The flow of the tracks on the compilation is laid out to traverse the events of the hurricane. First a soft windy breeze, a quiet surrender, then a dark moving mass of wheezing noise until it suddenly subsides into a dark and peaceful stillness. Then the selection oscillates through five stages of grief: denial and isolation, anger, bargaining, depression and finally acceptance. In the middle comes a glimpse of light and hope (this is my favorite part – can you guess where?) and the flow takes on an almost lighter mood, until the world, with a few stumbles along the way, falls back into the cycle of the norm… with moments gone but not forgotten…”

Ambient/Soundscape compilations tend to get more and more voluminous every year: for example, think of the (Future) Sequence 1-5 series, or Escala 2.3 for another example.
But who’s to complain if the quality is this good?

Needless to say …. And Darkness Came immediately went to #1 in Bandcamp’s top sellers list on the first day of release. And it will hopefully stay there for quite a while.

2012 has been a very good and productive year for the ambient-electronic-experimental-post-classical-improv music scene – and this charity compilation is easily the best way to conclude it. Or to start 2013 with.
