Sonae is Sonia Güttler from Köln, Germany, and “Far Away Is Right Around The Corner” is her first full album, released on the Monika label (founded by Gudrun Gut, who chose the name for her label as a posthumous tribute to her late goldfish who ‘commited suicide in its private aquarium’).
“Far Away Is Right Around The Corner” is the first Monika release for 2015 – and judged by this release alone it’s gonna be another great year for music!
It is not Sonae‘s very first release ever: there was a 2-track EP on A Strangely Isolated Place in 2012, she did remixes for Markus Güntner and 36, and contributed various tracks on several compilations. Recently, a (free) EP called “Entmutigt” was released on the Modismo netlabel
Besides her musical work Sonae is actively involved in female:pressure, an international network of female artists in Electronic Music. A worthy cause: woman are still under-represented especially in electronic experimental music
“Far Away Is Right Around The Corner” is released as a vinyl album (including download) only.
Presenting ten tracks “dealing with reflections about friendship, growing up and everyday life – full of hope as far away is right around the corner”, the music transcends the ‘ambient’ in various ways … at times, it also crosses over with ease to somewhat less quiet electronic music.
Sonae‘s music is imaginative – sometimes light-hearted, joyous, at other times somewhat darker (like ‘Song of Hate and Anger‘ and ‘Wandering’).
But the sound is, indeed, always full of hope.
Sometimes ‘joyous’ and ‘lighthearted’ may be confused with ‘one-dimensional’ or ‘simple’, but with the well-crafted soundscapes Sonae proves that is not necessarily so!
The album ís refreshingly different from many others – a welcome surprise between the massive amounts of darker and haunting ambient releases.
It’s interesting that I felt this would be a rewarding album to check out from the first moment I saw the album cover… which, by the way, was designed by Markus Güntner.
